About Dollars for Scholars

Dollars for Scholars®, a program of Scholarship America®, is a national network of more than 1,200 grassroots, community-based, volunteer-driven scholarship foundations located throughout the United States. There are chapters in 42 states, as well as seven regional offices around the country that provide support. Founded in 1958, Dollars for Scholars is the longest-standing Scholarship America program. Last year, Dollars for Scholars chapters raised more than $58.3 million, awarded nearly $29 million in scholarships to more than 35,000 students, and invested the remainder primarily in endowment funds for future scholarships.

President’s Message

As Dollars for Scholars enters another year of fund raising, we do so with gratitude to all those that supported our efforts last year. In 2011, it was our pleasure and honor to award $87,000 in scholarships to valley students.  Despite our busy fund raising calendar, we could not come close to that amount without the help of the individual donors, community organizations, businesses, professionals and foundations .
As college tuition costs continue to soar and financial aid is reduced due to budget cuts, students are graduating with huge debt. On November 8, 2011, the Union Leader reported that in 2010 New Hampshire ranked #1 in the country in loan debt. The national average of loan debt at graduation is $25,250. According to the Project on Student Debt, New Hampshire college and university graduates had an average debt of $31,048. Clearly, the help that you give individual students through Dollars for Scholars is needed!
The Valley has responded to the need of our college students through its response to our Phone-a-thons, our Business Appeal, support of our adult and student Scholar Bowls and attendance at our fund raisers, such as our Combined Concert and Flatbread night.  Many community organizations have chosen to administer their own scholarships through Dollars for Scholars due to the advantages for the students that this provides. Multiple scholarships are funded by charitable foundations that generously award grant money. These include the Gibson/ Woodbury Charitable  Foundation, The Robert and Dorothy Goldberg Charitable Foundation, The Kendal C. and Anna Ham Charitable Foundation and The Pequawket Foundation.
Your continued support is greatly needed and greatly appreciated,
Betsy Smith,
President, Dollars for Scholars of the Mount Washington Valley

Dollars for Scholars Mount Washington Valley Chapter

Dollars for Scholars Scholarships are available to High School Seniors planning to attend college full time and students already enrolled in college full time who are residents of the towns served by Kennett High School or Fryeburg Academy.
From left are Darrien Vaughn, Ben Emery, Mike Albert and Henry Gotjen of the winning Kennett High team and Jamie Gullikson, Cailyn Ludwig and Kiley Joliceur of Fryeburg Academy

Once again, the Dollars for Scholars student Scholar Bowl championship game was another nail biter!  School champions from Fryeburg Academy and Kennett High were very evenly matched with both teams bringing sharp minds and diverse knowledge. Fortunately this rivalry between the Fryeburg and Kennett competitors is a friendly one and serves a very important purpose: raising money for scholarships for valley students.

With the last question of the match, Kennett High school broke the tie score and became the Valley Champions. This team of winners, known as the Eukaryotic Philosophical Alliance was comprised of Mike Albert, Ben Emery, Henry Gotjen and Darrien Vaughn. They were proudly sponsored by Story Land. Fryeburg Academy was represented by a team of exceptionally bright students aptly named The Brainiacs. Watch for this team, comprised of Cailyn Ludwig, Kiley Joliceur and Jamie Gullikson to be back to compete in 2013 as seniors.  Story Land was also their proud sponsor.

The Annual Student Scholar Bowl is a team effort in many ways. Valley Vision provides the set and filming and George Epstein takes charge as our host. Dollars for Scholars board member Deb Karmozyn provides the well-researched questions and fellow board members provide the manpower required to score and time the games. Faculty members Pat Fox from Fryeburg Academy and David Freedman from Kennett High donate their time as team coaches.

This event would not be the successful fund raiser that it is without the financial backing of our sponsors. With much gratitude, Dollars for Scholars would like to thank Dr. Dennis Hiller, Settler's Green, Cross Insurance, White Mountain Oral Surgery, Story Land, Fryeburg Interact Club and the Anna Stickney Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
